So on the 16 June 2020, we celebrated Youth Day in South Africa!!! Under normal circumstances, BC ( Before Covid ) I would really be looking forward to this public holiday. This year, since we were having the public holiday on a Tuesday, I would have booked the Monday off from work a month in advance as leave, and celebrated the long weekend with my family. Since I am still working remotely from home and with my kids 24 - 7, I only realized that we were going to have a public holiday a few days before!
Being Youth Day on 16 June, there is many TV Programmes, documentaries and movies that commemorates the Soweto youth uprising of 16 June 1976. My eldest son's particular favorite being, A Long Walk To Freedom. This movie convinced him that his favorite actor in the world ( His words) is Idris Elba, who portraits Nelson Mandela in the movie, A Long Walk To Freedom. After watching the movie he was very inspired as he showed me the traditional outfit he had made from my winter throw. I smiled approvingly at his creativity and watched further, speechless as he began to march and shout to his siblings, Amandla ! Awethu ! And then he smiled and said to me, I want to be the next President of South Africa.....
During the month of June as the media commemorates Youth Day. My husband and I prepare ourselves for the many questions and discussions that may arise between my two sons. As a mom, my boys are apart of the youth of this nation. They are the new generation. As their first point of contact, it is extremely important what we instill in them. They were not born during that era, so as a mom I have the choice of instilling hate or love in them. As an ambassador for Christ, I choose to instill the love of God! My youngest son asked me the hardest question that I had to answer. He wanted to know what it means to be a Third World Country. And as I attempted to explain what it meant, anger, hurt and disappointment began to stir within me. I realized the stigma attached to being accredited A Third World Country. That you are not wealthy enough, intelligent enough, or gifted enough to be on the same level as a First World Country. As my son waited patiently for his answer, I knew I could not give him the answer that we were taught.
Phillipians Chapter 4 vs 13. I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me.
Even though the world may perceive us as one thing. As Ambassadors For Christ We have the potential in us to live out successfully the purpose that we were created for, regardless of where we come from, how rich we are, or how we look. Looking at my son I knew the best way that he would understand this is if he saw me living out this very principle in my own life. To know and live out my purpose in this life.
Martin Luther King Jr is famously known for his " I have a dream speech ". The I have a dream came to be regarded as one of the finest speeches in the history of American oratory.
I have had the privilege of reading another speech that has inspired me to live beyond what the world has considered us be.
A word to the Victims of History ( Dr Myles Munroe )
Today, despite changes in conditions and a greater measure of freedom and independence, many are still grappling with their identity and self worth. Many of the nations that progressed and developed through the industrial revolution have reinforced the notion that these Third World people do not posses the potential to develop the skills, intelligence and sophistication necessary to equal that of industrialized states. With this prejudice in mind, I wish to say to all Third World peoples everywhere - black, yellow, brown, red and white, African, American, Indian, and Spanish and other nationalities, your potential is limitless. You possess the ability to achieve, develop, accomplish, produce, create and perform anything your mind can conceive. God created you the way you are, with all the potential you need deposited within you so you can fulfill your potential in this life. The opinions of others should never determine your self worth. Your identity is not found in the prejudgment of others but in the source where you came from: God, Your Father and Creator. The wealth within the Third World must be realized, harnessed, and maximized by its people. We must be willing to work and commit ourselves to tapping the potential within the land, our youth. the arts and music. We have the responsibility to deposit the wealth of our potential in this generation so the next generation can build their future on our faithfulness to becoming everything we can possibly be.
So when my son told me that he would like to be the next President. I smiled and said that you can definitely be the next President. You have the potential in you to be anything you want!!!!
