On the 9th August we celebrated Women's Day, the entire month of August will be spent in remembrance and celebration of Woman. Besides the excitement of it being a Public Holiday and extending into a much needed long weekend, we are reminded about the past battles fought, the sacrifices made and the lives lost by heroic woman known, and unknown. Woman who have paved the way for us Modern Warriors to continue the race and pave a better way forward for the generations that may come after us. We live in a country which has being deemed as one of the most, unequal societies in the world, where there is a very defined separation between the Rich and the Poor. As a result of this, our South African Woman have suffered and continue to suffer under these harsh and unfair circumstances. House holds led by single woman and grandmothers often with no financial support from their counterparts, not forgetting the almost non existent monetary support from our government. It is no shock to us then that we see the ripple effect of this being played out in families who suffer in poverty, have to turn to crime, the increase of abuse and violence in homes. It is a vicious cycle of destruction and our South African Woman are at the forefront of this abuse and violence. Until we as a Nation, can fully acknowledge that a huge injustice has being done to South African Woman who are living in poverty, abused and victimized with no hope of a better future, then unfortunately there will always be a distinct separation between the Rich and the Poor.

At times it is so easy to feel disheartened when you think of all these things, I am then reminded of Queen Esther. She was born in a time of great political injustice and unfairness. Poverty, violence and despair was rife. But Esther, a woman ( the wrong gender ) and a Jew ( the wrong race ) had risen above all of this and saved her nation from analyzation, Queen Esther, in her time was definitely a Modern Day Warrior. When I think of our beautiful South African Woman during the month of August I echo the words that were told to Esther: And who knows that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this.

For if you continue to remain silent, the poverty, abuse, murder and inequality of our South African Woman will continue and the cycle will never be broken. This woman month we salute the woman of the past, who have paved the way for us woman of the present to continue to build and take greater strides to ensure a future for the new generations of woman that are coming through.
